Position confirmation

An upstream sensor is before the catalytic (cat.) converter, and a downstream sensor is after the catalytic converter.

Upstream oxygen sensor is also known as sensor 1, or pre-cat, or upper oxygen sensor.

Downstream oxygen sensor is also known as sensor 2, or post-cat, or lower oxygen sensor.

Increased fuel efficiency

The sensor achieves optimal engine performance by monitoring the oxygen content in a vehicle’s exhaust and regulating the air/fuel mixture to the ideal ratio of 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel.

Lower emissions

If the optimum fuel mixture is not maintained, the engine can emit harmful amounts of carbon monoxide and excessive levels of hydrocarbons.

Improved engine performance

A correctly operating oxygen sensor ensures efficient engine operation by making sure the engine is receiving the correct air/fuel mixture and thereby preventing the engine running lean or rich.

Prevents catalytic converter damage

As the catalytic converter is responsible for eliminating harmful gasses from the vehicle’s exhaust system, an incorrectly operating oxygen sensor can cause premature damage to your catalytic converter.
