GM 6.6L Duramax Overview

The GM 6.6L Duramax diesel engine is known for its power, reliability, and versatility. Over the years, the Duramax engine has evolved through several generations, each providing greater performance and technology to meet the needs of truck enthusiasts and heavy-duty applications.

Generations of the GM 6.6L Duramax Engine

LB7 (2001-2004): The first generation featured an aluminum cylinder head and 32 valves, a fixed geometry turbocharger, and a high-pressure common rail direct injection system. This generation was known for its strong performance, with 300 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. It was highly fuel efficient, but lacked factory EGR or emissions control.

LLY (2004.5–2006): The LLY version was introduced mid-model year with improved valve design and a variable geometry turbocharger. The LLY was known for increasing engine output to 310 horsepower and 605 lb-ft of torque. It introduced improved emissions control with an integrated EGR system. LBZ (2006–2007): The LBZ iteration is known for its strength and durability, with performance improvements up to 360 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. Overall, it has higher horsepower and torque with the least emission restrictions. However, some EGR plugging issues can occur, with common fault codes being P0401, P0404, P1404, P0405. LMM (2007.5–2010): The LMM was the first model to be equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to meet new emission standards. Despite being equipped with a DPF, it still delivers 365 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque, showing a balance between power and the environment. LML (2011–2016): The LML engine continues to push the limits, with an output of 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque. It is the first engine to feature the SCR Selective Regeneration system. A dual-circuit EGR system reduces NOx emissions by 63% compared to the previous generation LMM. It complies with the most stringent emission regulations to date. However, there are also some problems with the DEF heater, in which case we recommend replacing the OE heater plug with a retrofit DPF delete.
