Position confirmation

An upstream sensor is before the catalytic (cat.) converter, and a downstream sensor is after the catalytic converter

Upstream oxygen sensor is also known as sensor 1, or pre-cat, or upper oxygen sensor

Downstream oxygen sensor is also known as sensor 2, or post-cat, or lower oxygen sensor

Increased fuel efficiency

The sensor achieves optimal engine performance by monitoring the oxygen content in a vehicle’s exhaust and regulating the air/fuel mixture to the ideal ratio of 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel

If the optimum fuel mixture is not maintained, the engine can emit harmful amounts of carbon monoxide and excessive levels of hydrocarbons.
