The role of the intercooler pipes is to transfer the air compressed by the turbocharger through the path of turbo → intercooler → engine intake manifold.
You can think of it as two main passages:
Hot-side pipe: carries the high-temperature boosted air coming out of the turbo to the intercooler.
Cold-side pipe: carries the cooled air from the intercooler into the engine.
On many modern diesel engines, the factory intercooler pipes are made up of thin-wall plastic pipes, rubber hose sections, and multiple connection joints. At factory power levels and under ideal operating conditions, these components are barely adequate.
